Motorized Roller Shades and Woven Woods in an Apex Homes Showcase Home, South Denver
Motorized roller shades in South Denver completed the window design in this Apex Homes showcase home. Norman motorized rollers and woven wood rollers specified to complement the home’s wallpaper and moulding rather than compete with it.
The buyers came to us through their builder. Apex Homes referred them directly, which tells you something about how new construction works now: builders build beautiful houses and hand the windows to someone who does this for a living.
The Challenge
Showcase homes are designed to be looked at. This one had bold wallpaper in nearly every room — a tiled floral running floor to ceiling in the primary bedroom, a dragon pattern in the media room, a full landscape mural in the dining room — plus detailed moulding and custom millwork throughout.
That made the window treatments harder, not easier. Anything with pattern, texture, or visual weight would have fought what was already on the walls.
The living room added a practical problem on top of the aesthetic one. Ninety-inch windows, set high. Beautiful, and impossible to operate by hand.
Why Simple Worked So Well
We went minimal and let the house talk.
Motorized roller shades in Norman light-filtering material through most of the home. Clean lines, soft diffused light, no visual weight. In the dining room, the light-filtering fabric lets the window grid ghost through even when the shade is fully down — so the architecture never disappears.
In rooms that wanted more warmth, we specified woven woods — but as roller shades, not traditional stacked woven wood. Same natural texture, none of the bulky fold-up stack at the top. It kept the look sleek in a house where every detail was considered.
The primary bedroom got room-darkening rollers in a warm neutral. With that tiled floral running up the walls and around the window return, a patterned shade would have been a fight. The solid reads almost as part of the wall when it’s down.
Motorization Where It Mattered
The 90-inch living room windows were never going to be operated manually. At that height, motorization isn’t a luxury feature — it’s the difference between shades that get used and shades that stay in one position for a year.
Norman motorization throughout, with both remote and app control. The whole house moves at once, or room by room.
The Lower Level
The basement isn’t a basement — it’s a movie room, bar, guest bedroom, sauna, bathroom, and gym. Rooms people actually live in.
The media room needed light control that could go dark for viewing without making the space feel like a cave the rest of the time. Rollers handled both, and kept the sightlines clean against the wallpapered feature wall.
We can coordinate around your construction and move-in schedule, help determine which windows need privacy or light control, and design treatments that feel like they were always meant to be part of the home.
The Transformation
Four weeks from consultation to installed.
The house was already beautiful. What the window treatments added was the sense that it was finished — light under control, glare gone, and every window looking like it had been planned from the beginning rather than solved after the fact.

FAQ
Can you motorize very tall windows?
Yes. Windows at 90 inches and above are exactly where motorization earns its cost. Hand-operated shades at that height rarely get adjusted, which defeats the purpose of installing them.
What window treatments work with bold wallpaper?
Solid, simple materials in neutral tones. When the walls are doing the design work, the window treatments should recede. In this home we used solid light-filtering and room-darkening rollers rather than anything patterned or textured.
Can woven woods be made as roller shades?
Yes, and often they should be. Woven wood in roller form gives you the same natural texture without the stacked fold at the top — a cleaner look in homes with a lot of detail.
Do you work with builders on showcase and model homes?
Yes. We were referred to this project by Apex Homes and work regularly with builders and their buyers across South Denver and Douglas County.
How long does a whole-home installation take?
This one was four weeks from consultation to installation. Timelines vary by product and order volume, and we coordinate around close dates for new construction.
